The Band Toto Asia

Toto was expanding production facilities overseas, and was doing business in France and Germany, Indonesia, Korea and Taiwan, Thailand and the People's Republic of China. North America was seen as an area of growth for bidet and washlet toilet seats, in contrast to its "base" markets in Japan and China.

Dhaniram Toto was recording Toto words to ensure the future generations would be able to read the words. Many words were substituted with foreign words. For instance, dui, which is Bengali for verandah, was used.

Origins

Toto's early history, which began in 1917, was a reflection of Japan's rapid economic growth. In the early years of its existence, the company produced products to meet the demands of new, modern urban housing. It used the first tunnel kilns in the country that could produce ceramics continuously. It also pioneered automation to allow production control, which allows for greater efficiency and a more consistent production.

The company began expanding its operations overseas in the late 1980s to take advantage of new markets and sales opportunities. It created the Cera Trading Company, importing and selling other products of manufacturers to complement its own range of plumbing fittings and sanitary earthenware. This strategy boosted sales and expanded the firm's global market share.

In the 1990s, Toto had shifted its emphasis on research and development for water-related household appliances. It also upgraded its distribution system to better serve the needs of its customers and to increase profits. The company used the same approach of just-in-time in its supply chain management and sales program. This resulted in a greater degree of customer satisfaction.

Toto has continued to innovate in the toilet technology. The latest toilet from the company features a powerful, environmentally-friendly tornado flush. Toto also makes use of recycled water in its production process and has a green purchasing policy. Apart from toilets, Toto produces bathtubs and faucets and hand dryers that are more efficient in energy use than standard models.

The first museum of the company was opened in the year 2015 and features exhibits on Toto's most iconic products and their evolution, its group companies (all having to do with ceramics) as well as the historical background of plumbing and products like bath units, and in a separate gallery, Toto products sold around the world. The museum also includes a bathroom with the WASHLET toilet, as well as other toilet-related innovations.

Before forming Toto, members of the band did sessions for various musicians. Keyboardist David Paich, drummer Jeff Porcaro and guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather all played on the album Silk Degrees by Boz Scaggs. They also appeared on records by Steely Don, Seals and Crofts and Sonny and Cher.

Discography

With a name as evocative as Asia one would think that the group would be prog queens and kings but they're actually a fairly simple rock band. The band began as a four-piece and released two albums in 1979, the self-titled debut album and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. Although the band have a wide range of musical backgrounds their biggest breakthrough was in 1982 with Toto IV.

The album was a major blockbuster, but not without issues. The record companies placed the band under pressure to release an album that was a success or they would drop the album. Toto was able to do this through the aid of the smash hit "Africa."

Toto's musical mastery is a result of their previous experience. Before forming the group, the band members worked as session musicians for artists such as Boz Scaggs. Steely Dan and Seals and Crofts. Their sonic trademark has become the standard for  the '80s, and has influenced many contemporary artists.

The album starts out hard with tracks like Running Out of Time or Unknown Soldier that show the band's ability to write great AOR songs that slowly sink into your head. The album also contains slow, jazzier tracks like The Little Things and Chinatown. The album concludes with Great Expectations. This song mixes folk and distorted AOR, which should appear completely unnatural, but actually works extremely well.

After Toto IV, the band's fortunes began to decline. David Hungate left to concentrate on his solo career, and the band was through numerous drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball left the band after drug charges. The band remained with Michael Porcaro, Steve Lukather and Michael Porcaro.

Toto released Isolation despite the turbulence. It was not as well-liked as IV. However, the group was able to release a chart-topping album in 1992 with Kingdom of Desire. The album marked the end of the original Toto lineup and was also the first to feature a new singer, Simon Phillips.

Line-up

The band's third album, Turn Back, marked a return to the classic sextet style of previous albums and was a more ferocious, constant effort with an edge that was more pronounced than Hydra. Its more punk-rock sound was a reflection of the maturation of the group, with drummer Bobby Kimball's greater virtuosity on drums, and an improved, mature vocal delivery by singer Joseph Williams. David Paich's keyboard playing was also more sophisticated, sharper, and less derivative on previous efforts.

After touring to promote their album, the group recorded the band's Amsterdam live concert which was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set entitled Falling In Between. The group released a brand new studio album a few months later, and went on a world tour to promote the album. In this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started exploring old tapes and demos for a new album featuring songs that were never recorded before. It was completed as a double album titled Then And Now in 2001. It was the first album in the band's history not to include any single song that had the word "A" in the title, and it also contained one previously unreleased track, "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial flop and vocalist Williams was suffering from a severe laryngitis infection which limited his singing capabilities. In addition, Hungate returned to Nashville, while drummer Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.

Downes, Wetton Palmer and Howe, the founding members of Asia were in England in the beginning of 2006 to discuss the possibility that the band could be reformed. The group, which was missing Howe who was occupied with Yes during that time, became Toto XIV. They toured extensively.

In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The band featured a special appearance by singer Michael McDonald and a backing vocalist named Mabvuto Carver.
